According to the sites i have been on there are five strands of Ebola, they are Ebola Zaire, Reston, Sudan, Ivory Coast and Bundibugyo (Bundibugyo was found in 2008) Do you mean Ebola-Zaire and Ebola-Reston?
I think that the main difference between Ebola-Zaire and Ebola-Reston is that Ebola-Reston is not infectious towards humans. From the Hot Zone we know that Reston is very contagious for Monkeys and when the army was taking action on finding out that it was Ebola, they were very careful. I am pretty sure Ebola-Zaire came fisrt, maybe Ebola-Reston is a mutation of Ebola-Zaire. "each filovirus contains 7 proteinds, four of which are completely unknown. Something slightly different about one of the Reston proteins is probably the reason the virus didnt go off in Washingon like a bonfire" (370) abby painchaud period one.
The diffrence between Ebola-Zaire and Ebola-Reston is that Ebola-Reston is a faster acting virus. it can cross species and has done so before going from mokey to human, infecting four people. Ebola-Zaire came first, identified at the Ebola River, in Zaire. Ebola-Reston is thought to be a mutation off of Ebola-Zaire. Towards monkeys Ebola-Reston is extremly lethal having a kill rate of 90%, burning through monkey stock in a matter of days not weeks.
Ebola- Zaire affected humans, and Ebola-Reston affected monkeys. With each virus the teams who investigated them had to be very careful because they both were very contagious. Ebola- Reston is very contagious in monkeys and it is possible that Eola- Reston originated from Ebola-Zaire.
The Ebola Zaire virus kills 90% of its human hosts and is only known to spread through direct contact. This virus came first and was always thought to be the most deadly. The virus went into hiding for a while until it reappeared in Ebola Reston. When compared with the Muyinga strain of Ebola Zaire, the monkey samples glowed, proving that Ebola Reston most likely evolved from Zaire. Luckily for the humans, it only had effect on the imported monkeys but it was obvious that the Ebola Zaire virus had only created something more vicious. It had flu-like symptoms, killed monkeys in days and was spread through air. Evidently, for a place with an air system, the fact that the virus was airborne was brutal. Dr. Phillip Russel says "...'When I saw the respiratory evidence coming from those monkeys, I said to myself, My God, with certain kinds of small changes, this virus could become one that travels in rapid respiratory transmission through humans.'..." With slight variations like these, the Ebola virus could evolve into something that could wipe out the human race.
The main two strains of Ebola viruses are Ebole Zaire and Ebola Reston. Although Ebola Zaire and Ebola Reston may seem extremely alike since they are both filoviruses (a very rare rope-shaped virus) and cause the same symptoms like excessive bleeding, there is one major difference between them. Ebola Zaire is considered the most deadly strain of Ebola because it kills 90% of humans infected with it, where Ebola Reston has only been found to infect monkeys. With a few small mutations Ebola Reston could become the most deathly virus in the world because it can travel by blood and through the air. It only needs to jump to humans to do major damage to our species. Ebola Zaire can only be spread through blood causing it to be hard to catch in clean areas but it’s very deadly once infected.
Ebola Zaire can "jump species" unlike Ebola Reston. As seen in the book, Ebola Zaire was able to jump from monkeys to humans through direct contact with blood. Ebola Zaire can only be transmitted through direct contact, while Ebola Reston can only be transmitted through the air. Also unlike Ebola Zaire, Ebola Reston is currently only found in monkeys. However, if the virus strain were to evolve and be able to jump to the human species - it stands the potential to wipe out the human race. Contact with one another of any sort could prove to be fatal, and public travel would cause an immense spread of the virus.
Ebola Zaire and Ebola Reston are hemorrhagic filovirus sisters- or two very similar yet very different forms of Ebola. Ebola Zaire is known to be extremely deadly and contagious to both humans and other primates (it was able to jump species). Ebola Reston is known only to affect other primates (such as monkeys). Ebola Zaire is not able to travel through the air, Ebola Reston can. Through evolution, Ebola Reston may be able to jump species-becoming a huge threat to humans.
The two types of Ebola that are primarily focused on in “The Hot Zone” are Ebola-Zaire and Ebola-Reston. The Zaire strain of Ebola was the first out of these two to be found, detected near the Zaire River in Africa. Ebola-Reston strain was discovered in a monkey house in Reston, Virginia. The Ebola-Zaire virus is lethal to humans, and kills about 90% of all the hosts that it infects. This strain is found in both primates such as apes and chimps and in humans – having the same effects on both of these species. Also, Zaire is able to jump species – just like it did from monkey to human – but it is not able to travel through the air. Different from the Zaire strain, Ebola-Reston is not harmful to humans, and is just destructive to monkeys – as was seen in the Reston monkey house. This strain of the virus has symptoms of an extremely bad flu with little hemorrhagic fever, unlike Zaire which has severe bleeding. Fortunate for the workers of the Reston project, Ebola-Reston is not able to jump species, but it is able to travel through the air – making it extremely contagious for the monkeys. Just as many others have posted, with the evolution of the Ebola virus, the Reston strain could someday become lethal to humans, or another strain of Ebola could come out from hiding and be a threat to humans.
The two types of Ebola that are common in physical features but have different effects on their host are Ebola Reston and Ebola Zaire. Ebola Zaire is highly contagious through bodily fluids. The death rate of Ebola Zaire has been up to 89%. This Ebola strain has killed hundreds of humans and is highly contagious in humans. Ebola Reston has a similar physical appearance of Ebola Zaire and attacks its host in a similar way but is transmitted differently and affects a different species. Where Ebola Zaire affects both humans and monkeys, Ebola Reston only affected Monkeys. There were many instances when humans were exposed to the virus but they never caught the virus, or if their body contained the virus, they lived with it and were never affected by it. Ebola Reston is only harmful to monkeys. It infected and exterminated hundreds of Monkeys in the monkey house in Reston, VA and in the monkey distributer in the Philippians but has never harmed humans. Ebola Reston also seemed to be transmitted through the air at the monkey house. The monkeys were not being exposed to each other’s blood and yet the virus still spread. These two strand contrast in many ways but are still fierce killers in the species they affect. Madison Stewart-Boldin Period Four, Mailhot

What about the evolution of these viruses.. how could that affect the differences between the different ebola viruses.
